Packaged Goods Survey Trends for 2010

Several news reports lately have highlighted how industrious consumers are tinkering with the junk in their garages in the hopes that they can invent the next hot new product, or at the very least, a better mouse trap. While we’re waiting for these breakthrough successes, Mintel is tracking what it believes will be the hot trends in consumer packaged goods (CPG) for 2010. Mintel analysts say that next year’s best sellers will be modifications of existing products.

Foodservice Alcohol Sales Predicted to Drop in 2010

Bars and nightclubs may be the only foodservice vendors that have reason to cheer in 2010. That’s because these establishments are expected to see sales of beverage alcohol rise by 0.6%. According to Technomic other away-from-home businesses will see a further decline in sales of beverage alcohol in 2010. The overall average drop may be about 2.5% but some establishments will fare better than others.

Consumers Once Again Purchasing Items at Convenience Stores

After several quarters of declines in purchase incidence across most categories, consumers returned to purchasing a larger variety of products from convenience stores in the second quarter of 2009, according new research from The NPD Group. Bottle/can soda, frozen/slushy drinks, and other tobacco products all increased purchase incidence by +0.7 percentage points compared to second quarter 2008. “With gasoline prices below last year’s historic highs, many consumers are beginning to feel the freedom to pick up a single serve beverage or a snack,” says David Portalatin, industry analyst for NPD’s auto unit. “In some cases, consumers may look at these items as an inexpensive meal replacement.”

Consumer Spending on Cold Cuts Continues to Climb
