More Consumers Researching and Booking Travel Online
After a drop in 2009, online sales for leisure and unmanaged business travel picked up steam again in 2010. The number of U.S. consumers researching and booking travel online is still growing. More than 114 million people will research travel online this year, and 93.9 million will book it. This year, eMarketer estimates, the average amount each online travel booker will spend is $1,145. That will go up to $1,213 in 2012. eMarketer estimates that total U.S. online sales of leisure and unmanaged business travel will increase another 8.5% this year to $107.4 billion, up from $99 billion in 2010.
Home Improvement Industry to Rebound due to Pent-up Demand, Need for Repairs
The arrival of spring usually signals the start of spring cleaning and the undertaking of do-it-yourself (DIY) home improvement projects. During the recession, many consumers chose to make minor improvements to their homes instead of pursuing large and costly renovation projects. However, as the economy improves and retail sales rise, Mintel forecasts growth to accelerate in 2011 and, presuming a stabilization of the housing market, to remain positive through 2015. According to Bill Patterson, senior analyst at Mintel, “pent-up demand, ongoing need for repair and maintenance, retro-fitting, and renovations from Boomers approaching retirement and demand from Millennials should all propel DIY spending.”
Mobile Travel Planners Represent New Opportunity for Marketers
Smart device apps and mobile-optimized websites are changing the way people travel, from trip planning to boarding an airplane to how they experience destinations. According to new research by eMarketer, an estimated 25 million U.S. mobile users will research travel information on their mobile devices before making a trip in 2011, and nearly 12 million will use the mobile channel to book their plans. The emerging mobile trend represents new opportunities for marketers to connect with consumers before, during and after their trips. “An integrated, comprehensive approach will serve brands best,” said Noah Elkin, eMarketer principal analyst and author of the new report. “The more flexibly brands can offer to help their customers manage their travel…the more effective they will be.”
Men – Particularly Boomers – Are Fueling Rebound in Cosmetic Surgery
A new report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons shows that men underwent more than 1.1 million cosmetic procedures in 2010, a rise of 2%. Many male surgical procedures increased significantly; facelifts for men rose 14% in 2010, while male liposuction increased 7%. For men, though, some experts believes the spike in plastic surgery has a direct relationship with the economy, as baby boomers are trying to look younger to compete in the job market. Another trend plastic surgeons are seeing is the type of patient seeking their services – the typical patient is now just an “average” guy who wants to look as good as he feels, and is not necessarily a high-profile consumer. The type of procedures that men seek out vary by age.
