Online Shopping Making Significant Gains in Home Improvement Industry
As the home improvement industry continues to recover, specialty retailers (such as storage and organization) are making significant gains. Online shopping has also seen significant growth, with dollar sales up 15% over 2009. Online now represents five percent of all home improvement sales, but is even more important in the specialty channel, representing 20% of those sales, with kitchen and bath specialty stores leading the way in the 12 months ending September 2011.
Future Homes Will Be Smaller, More Eco-Savvy and Multifunctional
Over-size homes will give way to smaller, more eco-savvy homes with fewer rooms while family rooms and kitchens will grow larger, according to a new survey of future design trends from the International Furnishings and Design Assn. Formal living and dining rooms will become a thing of the past, as separate rooms disappear and blend into spaces that serve many different purposes.
Home Remodeling Activity Climbs in Most Areas of the U.S.
Residential remodeling activity in March 2011 rose 14% in year-over-year comparisons, according to an index compiled by BuildFax. All regions of the country showed gains with the exception of the Midwest, which posted a decline in remodels. The West posted the largest gains, followed by the Northeast and the South.
